Oh what a horrid, wretched time, certainly beyond belief,
Emotions lay bleeding in the dust, pain their rampant chief.
The intensity of this bitter time, makes you grind your teeth,
The matter I raise - a maelstrom - this awful place called grief.
A loved one lost - cruelly, irrevocably taken,
Your soul to its sobbing core - chilled, distraught and shaken.
Why have they gone?…Why have you been forsaken?
No answers come, all reason gone, your heart truly breaking.
No solace you’ll find in the words of friends,
All you want to see is that this is the end.
No comfort you’ll find, though you’ll try to pretend,
No ease will come from kind messages they’ll send.
A card won’t replace a loved one taken away,
How can others understand what you feel today?
You want to hide from this pain and awful dismay,
There is nothing you or anyone else can say.
But in time - pain will ease - feelings return,
And it’s to those remaining, to which you’ll turn.
To find comfort and peace - your love they’ve earned,
Together you’ll talk of the lessons learned.
You’ll speak differently of this loved one lost,
You’ll no longer selfishly count the cost.
Warm soft memories will in conversation be tossed,
You’re left to go on - the love never lost.
Time is a great healer - will dry your tears,
May take months - may take years.
But love will erode all horrid fears,
And remove from your heart all the daggers and spears.
You see I’ve been there - I know it well,
Were many times when onto my knees I fell.
From experience etched in pain…only now I can tell,
A richer better person - I’ve emerged from Hell.
