Said “Joe you gotta come quickly”,
I replied “Can I say goodbye?”,
He smiled and said “that’s what they all ask of me”.

Asked the obvious question,
“Will it be heaven or hell?”,
Said wouldn’t know ‘til I got there,
See who answers when you ring the bell.

I picked up my mac and lit a smoke,
Followed in his wake,
Guess I must have dragged a bit,
Cos he said “get a move on for pity’s sake".

Asked the obvious question,
“Will it be heaven or hell?”,
Said wouldn’t know ‘til I got there,
See who answers when you ring the bell.

Got half way to above and beyond,
And I rested and looked on down,
It was my life spread out below,
Being played out in my home town.

Asked the obvious question,
“Will it be heaven or hell?”,
Said wouldn’t know ‘til I got there,
See who answers when you ring the bell.

I could see my wife and kids crying,
At a graveside laying flowers,
Didn’t know they loved me that way,
Had given them minutes instead of hours.

Asked the obvious question,
“Will it be heaven or hell?”,
Said wouldn’t know ‘til I got there,
See who answers when you ring the bell.

The Grim Reaper shook my hand,
“Joe, it seems you’re gonna be fine,
You’re going back home to family
But I’ll get you next time”.

Asked the obvious question,
“Will it be heaven or hell?”,
Said wouldn’t know ‘til I got there,
See who answers when you ring the bell.

Suddenly he had gone away,
All around me turned to light,
My head swam, what on earth,
Mumbled voices, shades of white.

Asked the obvious question,
“Will it be heaven or hell?”,
Said wouldn’t know ‘til I got there,
See who answers when you ring the bell.

Through the cloud appeared a surgeon,
Seems that with his skilful knife,
He had speedily managed,
With God to save my life.

If you ask the obvious question,
“Will it be heaven or hell?”,
You don’t know much about yourself,
You don’t know your life too well.

I wondered up to the last verse how it would end, thanks for pointing out that we all have the answer to "that" question in our own hands. Thanks for a great write, I enjoyed it a lot.
