said Pete's missing
from Barnett Missouri
A man with charisma
Women loved him
Children loved him
I recall when
my daughter, about three
Pete would buy her candy
at the station
But Pete always got his kiss
candy, for kisses
Candy kisses
Pete would talk about old times
I would sit and listen for hours
he told the story of hunting
Bull Frogs
he was in the boat
with gig in hand
their they were, bull frogs
everywhere, he gigged one
then two, and three
they were alive
but their hind legs were missing
was he ever mad!
I was laughing my head off
I know where those legs went
the frying pan
Ole Pete never knew the wiser
those legless frogs
were crawling with their front legs
on the moss
Pete loved to hunt
mushrooms, squirrels, rabbits, frogs
especially squirrels
Sunday morning walks
through the woods
Poor Pete died that summer
I still wonder,
how he met hid fate
Sheriffs department
searched for weeks
never finding Pete
the squirrels watched him die
that fateful day
death that day was like bird
droppings, it had no mercy
death was grasped by the gaze
of a teary squirrels eye
the worms crawled Pete
all summer long
Pete was found that fall
by a deer hunter
the deer hunter was a preacher
he is preaching somewhere
in Alaska
that poor preacher
he'll always shed a cold tear
somewhere, in Alaska
I have even hunted these woods
where Pete passed away
when Pete was found
the preacher saw a glint
Pete's belt buckle gleaming
in the sun light
I guess Pete's soul was calling
the preacher
through the glowing belt buckle
maybe ole Pete is still walking
shining somewhere
telling stories
I found where Pete was
several years after he was found
there's a cross there
saying, this is where Pete was
I felt a sorrowfulness for him
but Pete died doing
what he loved to do
candy kisses
kisses for Pete
may the easter lilies kiss Pete
each spring
may the dew drops
reflect his soul somewhere
deep down, Pete was a good man
children brought him joy the most
Pete's missing, Pete's missing,
he is in your candy kisses
cherish his flavor, forever. [comments] => 9 [counter] => 223 [topic] => 8 [informant] => Wesley_Dale_Willis [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 12 [ratings] => 3 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => AmericanTragedy )

That was beautiful! What an incredible way to tell a story. Made me wish I'd known Pete, but I think I know someone much like him.

Wow, I had to print this one. It tells such a sad story and yet it tells so much about someone else on the inside. You're right, I did like it.
