Touching even its heart of coal.
Heat churned inside to the melody on the wind's tongue,
Filling more than the capacity of any human lung.

Eyes shone bright with wisdom beyond compehension
It's brain in its skull, its mind an extension.
Anger emanated from the beast
For now it hated everything from greatest to least.

Watching all of creation from the sky
It was clear the creature knew it had to die.
Those who knew of its existence didn't seem to notice
Their belief held on a thread, more brittle than a lotus.

The creature considered its inevitable fate
It was time for it to go, and it would still be late
If someone had seen it or bothered to look
They would have said it was but a dream from a book.

This realization greatly pained it
As it watched the humans in their pit.
It would bring others with it, the creature thought as it seethed
And for the very last time, the dragon breathed.

Its breath spiralled across the earth
Signifying its death and fire's birth.
For it and others, its cry was the same
The last time the earth saw a dragon's flame. [comments] => 4 [counter] => 145 [topic] => 40 [informant] => Eve [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => fantasy )

This, I like. Excellent imagery here, and a poem that seems to have more depth each time I read it. You stun me again, o she of many talents and owner of the sacred green pen.

Keep writing or develop cataracts,
-V.S.

Of course, I'd like to say I knew what you were describing all the way up to (and including) the fifth stanza, but I was, indeed perplexed. This heightened the wonderment of your imagery of a dragon, swooping, terrible upon it's final, fiery descent. Excellently done.
