above the saltbush plain
cattle now bedded for the night
looks like we're in for rain.

The stirrups are a jingling
like a lively, merry tune
and I think I'll tell our story
to old man yellow moon.

I think of days long gone now
when we tramped the track
we were the toast of every town
out in the vast out back.

We'd come and do the races
or perhaps a gala ball
but we would always be as one
together we would fall.

And I often think about you
old mate, and what we did
how we'd muster up a cleanskin mob
to keep us off the skid.

Or go fencing for a living
out on the western plains
and swear and curse the blessed soil
and sweat buckets from the strain.

As I lay upon my swag now
I still see your cheeky smile
and wonder where you are now
and those lonely distant miles.

So old mate I bid you well
and hope you're on a real good run
as I tend now to my dogs
I'll toast you with a rum.

I'll watch the campfire burning
out here where you have been
and remember what we've done in the past,
and what we both have seen.

So with yellow moon a rising
I must ponder unknown fate
Strangely I hear those familiar words
"How ya' goin' mate."
"How ya' goin' mate."
