For this day to come,
As I squirm impatient in my seat,
Under this scorching June sun.
I can hear the voices all around me,
Calling out names to their destinies.
Walking toward the future in a cautious stride,
Life we now must abide.
I get nervous thinking about the upcoming moments,
In my seat,
Will I walk tall,
Or will I fall from under my feet?
The time is getting closer,
Everyone will be watching me,
My family expierencing my accomplishments,
And about to follow my dreams,.
I have to stop thinking,
As I get up to stand in line,
The people in my row are being called,
Like rare diamonds it's their time to shine.
The sun is reaching towards me,
It's my time to stand tall,
As I walk towards the stage,
My name finally is being called.

Wow! That really brought back the anticipation of graduating... I FELT this way in high school - so much, in fact, I was a no-show to my undergrad and graduate school ceremonies! Nice Job, Heather!

I love this piece -- I just graduated.
Funny you should mention tripping. No, I didn't trip, but I got really nervous and confused, and wound up walking behind the podium when we were clearly supposed to walk in front of it. People laughed, my family didn't get a picture, embarassing times.
Anyway, I can relate to the feeling this poem portrays
Thank you
~Emily~
