pretending we were orphans
chatting with the real ones
riding on the orphan train
you told them there were worse
things than being orphaned
showing little compassion
but getting them to laugh
and forget their fate
if only for a moment
i cried inside for those
poor children trapped
aboard that train

you and i went where
we wanted to go
did what we wanted to do
living life like
there was no tomorrow
we were always together
to our parent's dismay

it was as though we were
meant to be together
until that dreadful day in may
when i heard my poppa say
he got a new job in another state
and we had to move away

i wrote you letters
that never got returned
i don't know why
you never answered
ferlin, you were my
best friend and confidant
i just can not believe to
you i am so easily forgotten
i sense that things will
never be the same again
unless i find you
somehow my dearest friend

Lovely write, I think it's sad how friendships can fall apart as quickly as they're formed.
