I stand
On the edge of a cliff
The cliff is my present
All that is familiar
and the space beyond the cliff
Is my unknown future
Failure is not an option
So I must grow wings and fly
Where they will take me, I do not know
Who they will make me is even hazier
The only things clear to me
Is my need to succeed--
I hesitate
I do not want to leave
This place of comfort
Here I know where I stand
I know where I am wanted and belong
But this real world
Does not look inviting
Ready to push me down if I falter
Despite my fears I close my eyes
And put on my cap and gown
I walk across the stage
And fly into my bright but frightening future
