Array ( [sid] => 46155 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Desert Pastoral [time] => 2004-05-04 13:30:08 [hometext] => A critique of the over-commercialization of Dubai (for those who don't know, it's part of the United Arab Emirates, famed for it's shopping & tourist industry). The advent of cosmopolitan living, subsequent affect on culture & religion. Enjoy, if you can. [bodytext] => Imagine the Manhattan of the Middle East
entombed in a desert plane.
Treasure trove of opportunity, awaiting
harvest. Shovel sand aside

for the birth of designer buildings bright, toy blocks
hoisted high to reach the skies.
Unveil the new dawn before a worldwide crowd, sing
‘Marhabah*’, new age Dubai.

Some, clumsy, lost their heritage. Others meaning
well, neatly wrapped and put away
cultural baggage. Discarded identities,
shed in the careless manner

of snakes. A lesser evil, forgotten until
the trade-off: selling their souls
for over-priced coffee, making room for foreign
invasions flooding onto

shelves, into language. Souvenirs. Modernity.
Tourists flock to beaches bare
Returning red and raw, like sausages well done.
Now embrace modernism.

Desert nomads imparted their wisdom upon
deaf ears. See their wrinkles, then
revel in the rescue from their archaic mode
of life. All legend now. Launch

on a crusade to lend sophistication to
primitive peoples. Bask as
Shopping Festivals replace religion, and feign
ignorance of culture clash.

Cliques multicultural, each to their own starry
eyed naivety. Believe
if you will the tale of benign investors
who brought on board big brand names

and the invention of a new pecking order.
And we are grateful for all
their kindnesses. Adhan**, more outlandish than the
watch of Big Brother, waiting…
