‘Bout four or eight
My mom was poor
And life was great

We had a house
A happy home
My clothes were clean
My hair was comb’d

I had enough
Wore a true smile
‘Til I’d espied
The coolest style

“They’re just so cute
And I’m so keen
They come in blue
And pink and green

The shoes of choice
Oh mommy dear
Buy them!
I’ll be good all year!

They light up bright
A pretty red
A shoe with lights
Inside it’s tread

It’s all I want
It’s true! I swear!
Not even a
New teddy bear.”

How I begged
Yes, I did plead
Professing that shoes
Were all I’d need

The flashing lights
Fascinated me
And sent me on
A smiling spree

The years went by
The gifts were few
But none of them
Were my prized shoes

Around age twelve
I gave it up
Forgot the shoes
My hopes burned up

Once in a while
I’d see some sneaks
And hence a smile
Came o’er my cheeks

A few requests
One here, one there
Those light up shoes
Were everywhere

Then one fine day
At age sixteen
My mom comes home
To make a scene

She said, “This is
For all the times
Of just one thing
You were deprived.”

She dropped a bag
Onto the floor
The sight of lights
Made my heart soar

Just when I thought
It was the best
I saw it all
I saw the rest

First they lit up
My favorite trick
AND they were sandals
Oh! What a kick!

Not one pair,
Nope, mom bought two
One in purple
One green and blue

The lights are blue
The sandals white
A splash of color
For my delight

But most of all
I saw the love
And all the dire
I’d scarce knew of

Although the times
Were less than slick
Mom’s love fixed things
So smooth and quick

And even now
That we’re not poor
She “makes it up”
With gifts galore

I’m glad that life
Is tranquil now
At least in terms
Of wrinkled brows

We worry less
We laugh a lot
And love’s the thing
We’ve always got

Aww, how charming...
(sorry to sound so patronizing there... but I'm past the days of sandals...)

I like the love behind it too.

That's cool, I really liked it! And you also kept the rhyme through the whole thing really well...
Take care... smile!
