THE THOUSAND MILE STARE(Peter Sprenkeler)
A strange and foreboding expression of war, Only those whom have killed know it as law. Epitomizing grieffrom the world life they tore, Sadness in the eyespleading what was it for?
A blank and fearful appearanceglazed and lost, Trying to comprehendthe scale of the cost. The memories vividon their minds forever embossed, To what degree of insanityhave they crossed?
I have heard the soldierthis appearance can wear, So much deathhow does he cope or even care? It is his wounded soul that this burden must bear, You must have killedto own the stare.
A realization that a part of humanity he has ended, Down the staircaseof depravity he has descended. What he has inflictedcan never be mended, A fear his enemys barbarityhe may have transcended.
A state of griefof shockof non-plussed mind, Grappling hopelesslyfor answers to find. Emotions cannot withinutter a word that is kind, Personal humanity achesthe souls teeth grind.
And yet those whom have experienced this starethis state, Long for a time when the mental anguish will abate. For such intensity of painhealing cannot wait, Yet only those with a heartknow healing will always be late.
