I glanced up the way and saw a young man,
As he walked along he kicked an old can.
Deep in thought as he passed my way,
I said good morning, how is your day.

He said it was fine he was headed to town,
“I heard that today a job could be found.”
It seemed that he had so much on his mind
I asked if that can was a way to kill time.

With that he replied, “not really” he guessed,
Kicking this can he finally confessed,
It’s a way for me to dream and to cling
To the thoughts of what tomorrow might bring.

Walking along and kicking this can
Provides me the time to understand,
That I can be someone that I want to be
Instead of what others decide for me.

I can be a pilot, an astronaut,
A doctor, a lawyer, it takes much thought.
Build cars or planes, so much I can do,
Or be a dad, just like you.

See this is my time it’s a good time for me
These thoughts and ideas will only help me.
He said goodbye and went on his way
And I thought of the things that he had to say.

A few days later as I started to leave
My wife looked at me and could hardly believe,
I was going for a walk, that I had no plan
But to just go think, and “kick an old can.”

“Kick an Old Can”

This poem was very touching...it goes to show that people do have independence and do believe that they can do what they want to do...This is a very good write....Keep it up!
