are what she has left me.
And a handful of pictures,
Turning up now and again
In a mess of yellowed papers.

Some claim I look like her.
I try to know her through
My eyes--grey/blue (like hers)
In mirror's effigy.
A clouded visage returned...

Questioning/Grasping.

Salt-water drops betray private
Pinings for forgotten memories,
And those never to be known.
Ironically, concealed evermore,
In graveyard resplendence.

Metamorphosed into a legend,
Turned larger than life by death--
If only words were liberation.
Eternally bound by blood,
She will always be my Mother.

Your strength as a writer is most apparent when the subject matter is close to your heart. It is evident, even in the progression of your first few submissions, that you are becoming more skilled as you go. As deftly as you handle rhyme (and you do--these comments should not be construed as to diminish those previous), you are all the more eloquent when freed from that constraint. You are a powerful new voice, and you will be heard.

I love your description of pictures, / Turning up now and again / In a mess of yellowed papers, clearly indicative of the chaos which is left behind when loved ones leave us early. Equally impressive is the "clouded visage returned," as you seek to know your mother through your own eyes, reflected as mirror-image. I can only believe your tears are that which cloud your vision, and they are a part of you, as surely as the image you strive to bring into focus.

Questioning/Grasping...

Here, the poem is bisected beautifully, as the reader is clued in to the true nature of your plight. This sense of incompleteness permeates your being. While putting up a strong front, your tears represent "private pinings" for memories you secretly suspect you have no right to long for. After all, how can you miss what you've never known? Here lies the crux of the matter: yours is a search for identity with no foreseeable conclusion. That the source of your questioning now resides in "graveyard resplendence" is no comfort--and it *is* ironic that cemeteries, which hold such sadness for the survivors of tragedy, should be so outwardly beautiful.

Ultimately, neither poetry, nor the "legend" of that person your mother was, can free you from your search. You are left with one indelible fact: your relationship with her will forever elude satisfactory definition by others. And so, you have but yourself as testiment of the woman who preceded you. Though questions may never cease, I have a feeling she would be proud of the person you've become. As am I--for your poetry speaks volumes never uttered. With thanks for this strong, uncompromising work,

Love Always, -KAC-

Thank you for this poem, you have just mirrored the way I feel about my mother too.
May you always be as happy as you want to be, and may rainbows be your arbor and sunshine your helping hand. Keith

We may look like, sound like, but we are unique unto ourselves, still...we want and seek, that which we may never know...we may give so much more.

You have done your Mother so sweetly, thank you for sharing.

She will always be my Mother.

Isn't this a huge statement. Having experienced some of what you speak of, I was moved by your words.

NIce job.

This is enormously moving... so reflective and honest and real and powerful. The effect of loss... and love... are far reaching and undeniable. You have honored both your mother and your emotions with piece. And... I suspect... you have/will move many of us for having done so. My eyes were filled with tears as I read this... it is so eloquently presented... painful, yet beautiful. It clearly came from your heart... and it tugs at mine. I am so terribly sorry for your loss. And... even though I don't know you, I feel so very proud of you for writing and posting this piece. It is extraordinary.

I shall hug my mother a little tighter next time I see her...

This is quite a good exploration of your feelings and the subject. I'm sure few suicides begin to imagine the legacy they leave behind. Impressive thoughts.
