Eyes of equal want
Set anxious upon the stove,
Melted butter dispersed to a pattern
of a thousand jaundiced islands;
floating on a full cream bovine broth,
Three white shells spent,
Cracked and discarded,
Await their inevitable trashing,
A simple seasoning,
A pinch and another,
The secret? English mustard
A measured teaspoon halved
Stirred brisk into the thickening,
Yellow as a summer sun,
As rich in taste as in colour,
Salmon smoked
Of modest pink and portion
Sides a bagel – toasted,
As contentment compliments
This day of perfect promise.
