I was a freckled hyper
little thing
I didn't stop talking
and I used to run to everywhere
and destroy everything
she's loud for such a runt
my grandma would say
and I would run backwards
through screen door summers
into wet grass
and got lost in the leaves
and wake up to snow drift
mornings and teased the birds on the
white soft ground and
burst into cherry trees and
red yellow purple flower
and with brown shoulders
jumped back into cold summer sea
Smooth-faced and calmer now
I live by notebooks and textbooks
contracts preparation
and pretending to be competitive but really just
wanting back those half-crazy
sun seasons
without college planning
or clock watching
when I could laugh and cry
loudly
and always foolishly felt the need
to run
