~~~
Winding down the warm days of summer
September fades away
The earth changes colors
Preparing for a long winter stay
The leaves fly through the air
Before landing on the ground
In brilliant shades of autumn
Orange, red and brown
The flowers quickly die off
Returning to the earth
Hibernating through the winter
Awaiting a spring time birth
Gray clouds replace the blue skies
And the wind begins to blow
Creators of the summers
Start to prepare for the snow
Pumpkins replace Patio sets
Sitting on the lawns
Animals share the space
With hay in the barns
The smell of apple cider
From the kitchen fills the room
Broiling on the stove
While mother sweeps with a broom
On TV no more reruns
For the fall season has begun
Your favorite chair becomes the spot
To enjoy the wintry type of fun
Ahhhhh.... sounds like New England to me. I do love autumn - or rather parts of it. Nothing beats taking a drive for leaf peepin'... corn mazes... fall festivals... small NE towns ablaze with colors. But... the shorter days and chillier weather, I could do without!
This is lovely... a very appropriate write as we step gently into September!
Oh I just adore this poem. Such powerful, and inviting imagry, I am in love with fall, if i could make it fall all year long I would. This is really great, I can almost smell autumn through the words.
The first image that comes to my mind is a sinuous trail twining off into the distance, with faint white glimmers hinting of snow just beyond my mind's eye. This image, though more a personal portrayal than direct translation of your words, is fresh, and for that I commend you. The many shades of autumn seep into every color of life, from nature, to aromas, to kinship...with every hue construed. As I'm a bigger fan of either decidedly perfect rhythm, or none at all, I can't comment on the method of exposition, but your poem definitely brought a cozy seasonal transition to my mind.
Vividly done.
"All autumns bestow in each soul scenes unique; the myriad mirror makes perspectives oblique."
