For her first day of school
The way that I felt when I thought to myself
Man, you must look like a fool
And I tried to hide a tear in my eye
As I wished you could be there
When I tried to explain the source of my pain
She said she saw you sittin’ on the stairs

( and you told her to say )

You’re doin’ a fine job Daddy
But don’t give up just yet
She knows how much you miss her
And I’m not gonna let you forget
She says that she’s been waitin’ for you
But there are things you still have to do
So don’t worry Daddy, when you’re done
She’ll be there for you

Then she started askin’ questions
That I knew nothin’ about
I did my best to answer her
It was clear she still had her doubts
Daddy, why do I feel this way
Is there something I can take
That will make it go away
I threw up my hands in frustration
And she heard your voice

( and you told her to say )

You’re doin’ a fine job Daddy
But don’t give up just yet
She knows that you can’t see or hear her
But I’m not gonna let you forget
She says that she’s been waitin’ for you
But there are things you still have to do
So don’t worry Daddy, when you’re done
She’ll be there for you

She started college a few years ago
Where it was gonna take her
She just didn’t know
We our spent nights arguing what was best
As her search for knowledge
Continued its quest
Then spring turned to summer and summer into fall
She carried out her things as I stood in the hall

( she saw you in the mirror on my bed room wall )

She said you’re doin a fine job Daddy
But don’t give up just yet
She has always been here for you
She told me not to let you forget
I know that she’s still waitin’ for you
There’s still something you have yet to do
But don’t worry Daddy, when you’re done
She’ll be there for you

Now it seems like yesterday
I stood by her side to give her away
She caught that same
Look in my eye
She took my hand as we walked down the aisle
Squeezed it softly then said with a smile
If only Mom could be here today
I know just what she’d say

She’d say you’re doin’ a fine job Daddy
But you’re not done just yet
And I know if we could only see her
She’d be filled with pride, I bet
I’m certain she’s still waitin’ for you
To finish what you’re here to do
Don’t worry Daddy, when you’re done
She’ll be there for you

Our new grandson lies sleeping
Just a few rooms away
She sits by my side and doesn’t quite know
Where she’s supposed to stay
So caught up in her emotions, from elation into gloom
She doesn’t seem to notice as you walk into the room
I lift a trembling hand to the side of her head
Now it’s my turn to tell her, what you just said

You said, You’ve done a fine job Hun
And I just want to let you know
The sweetest gift I’ve ever had
Was bein’ able to watch her grow
Baby, I’m proud of you
But now it’s time to let her go
Just put your hand in mine
And Darlin’ let me
Lead you

*Sobs!* This is the most heartfelt poem I have ever laid eyes on!! A real tear-jerker! A truly touching piece, Scott... This must have been so difficult for you to write. Don't change a thing! It's perfect, as are all of your works... Enchanting, sorrowful... All in all, a magnificent write! Very emotional. Love it. I bet your daughter would love it, too. Thank you so much for sharing, cheri. I enjoyed it. All my love! Forever,

~*FleurdeSang*~

I have nothing left to cry.

It's an excellent work.
It really makes you keep reading.
And for a long write
that is very important.
Although I wonder what
the longest version ran.

I'm still a little dazed by
the epic quality of it all.

Naz, I think it's done! Beautifully done. Very emotional ... I can feel the love in this, Naz. No wonder, the tears.

A true work of the soul....

Yes, my friend, it's complete. There is nothing I can say to let you know how deeply this touched my heart. This reader shares your tears and is proud of you.
Very, very, well written.

It's finished! This is such a beautiful and touching write. It explains the past behind it without going into too much gruesome detail. Very uplifting! I was crying, but my heart was smiling.
