[bodytext] => Onward, forward ever tending, O’er ways of improvement resistless wending: Plato, Bacon, Hume, Kant, all, Wholly convinced the ‘plexing veil would fall, Haughtily bleated, “Advance, skyward fly!” As if winged inspiration e’er were nigh, Offering ample pinion our progress to aid – Straddling a downy current, into heaven fade. But mind you not my irreverent and insolent way Of straining to express my inveterate dismay; For though I don’t doubt the philosophers of old Had discovered in part truth’s goodly mold – Yet, upon self-originating reflection I find, Upon agitating my resolved and down-cast mind – It’s not on some divine effluence I ride! Why! to no sure path are my feet tied! But, glancing round on four walls hung with gloam, And back down into my maze flecked tome, It’s clear that within noxious realms I roam.
