Beautiful little girl
With your cute brown hair
Always so short
(If you were my daughter
I’d not let you cut it)

And those big, gorgeous eyes…
Surely you can’t remember
But I do
At Auntie Marilyn’s funeral
You were so playful
So active
Pure energy
Always keeping Aunt Jan
On her toes
But you stopped
Long enough to show interest
In my toes
(My bronze toe-ring)
It seemed as though you’d seen
Nothing
Ever
So amazing…
Tiny fingers
Dirty and curious
Pointing
And enquiring eyes
Gazing at mine
So full of wonder
So deep…
As though one could fall
Headlong inside
And find themselves
Swimming
In the depths
Of all the world’s oceans
And all of the night’s sky…
Do you remember?
No, of course not…
But promise me
You’ll try and remember me
As your sixteen-year-old cousin
Who watched over you
As you rolled a ball
Over and over again
Towards Lonesome Sam
Watching that he didn’t
Scratch your delicate hands...
And as your sixteen-year-old cousin
Who laughed with you
As we played catch
With the little rubber balls…
You were so nervous
When we lost one
(The yellow one)
That we would get in trouble
I had to reassure you
(You really should just have
Trusted me.)

And remember me
As your sixteen-year-old cousin
Who smiled with you
As we tried to set up
Those little plastic bowling pins
And you kept saying
“I’m four.”
So young
So jovial
So sweet…
I can’t wait to see you
In another ten years
You’ll be so beautiful
Such a heartbreaker
But do be careful
Boys have feelings too
(Remember that.)
I hope, as you grow
You never lose
Your fierce loyalty
And your inquisitive curiosity
(Go redundancy!)
Surely you don’t grasp
Just what it is
I’m trying to say
But
Maybe one day
Your wedding day maybe
(Surely it’s not as far off
As one would imagine)

You’ll understand
Just what it is
I’m saying…
You, my dear
Are the sweetest girl
I’ve ever known
In all my short life…
And I can hope
I can pray
That maybe
Just maybe
One day I can have
My own little girl
Just like you…
Big sister
And so proud…
Little sister
And so meddlesome…
Middle child
And so naïve…
I really wish
That I could live nearer to you
So I could see you
More than once every year
Or every two years…
So I could watch you grow
And evolve
And mature
Into a bright young girl…
I want you to know
Even though I don’t see you
As often as I’d like
I’ll always be here for you
(How cliché do I sound?)
And I would do
Whatever
It takes
To ensure that you are happy
And you succeed
In whatever it is you choose
To do in life…
I hope
(Really, I mean it)
That you can find
Someone
Who is as
Simply amazing
As you are…
Who can change your life
So dramatically
In the way you’ve done

Awww, that's such a sweet poem.
I am shocked that no one else has said anything!
This made me smile. I have a neice that I am reminded of by this.
Bless.

Thankyou very very much for sharing.
