So long has it been since I received a goodnight kiss

Paint smeared across cardboard
Oh today….

Childhood smiles slathered on my walls
What now?

(We whisper all these words to all these people never knowing what we say. We dance all these dances everyday never knowing the right step)

When was it?
The last time that laugh
Rung out through this world.

Your face is stained
With makeup, you used to hate
Silky teardrops fall gracefully
Oh the lives we live

(We sing songs to everyone never knowing the right tune. We kiss all the pretty boys we see, never knowing which one is ours)

The last time your smile was a light
To guide passing ships by
We were both silly children.

Warmth was something long ago gone
With the bitterness that came from screaming.
With the tears that came those lies
We clung to so tightly.

(But guess what? I don’t want to whisper those words, dance those dances, sing those songs or kiss those boys anymore)

So our backs were turned
Our heads facing other directions
You with your songs
Me with my journey for love.

But since that day we turned away
I’ve never had another goodnight kiss
As sweet as yours.

(I’m yelling my words now. I am dancing a dance I made up. I am singing a song that comes from my mind. I am kissing only one boy now, even if he is not with me anymore)

One day I will get another goodnight kiss like yours.

Very sweet-sounding and lyrical...
Well-written.
