Array ( [sid] => 83062 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Solitary Refinement Part 1 [time] => 2005-02-05 01:07:22 [hometext] => One poem split into two. Inspired by Memoirs of a Felon by Eddie Bunker (Mr Blue in Reservoir Dogs, pictured). Maya Angelou was a surprisingly accurate afterthought. [bodytext] =>

'A free bird leaps on the back of the wind
and floats downstream till the current ends
and dips his wing in the orange suns rays and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage
can seldom see through his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing. '(Maya Angelou I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings:excerpt)

I
An attitude they’ll not abide
The reply that wasn’t circumspect,
A threat to the Bosses’ pride
So break the dog the pups respect,
Break the dog the pups respect
Break the do……………………….

II
Reflex actions, flinch and curl
Steeling for the downward blow,
The swarming guards like waves unfurl
Against a shore that packs too slow
The howls of protest down the line
The yapping of the jailhouse pack,
LEAVE OFF HIM, YOU ******* SWINE!!
As steel-capped boots invade my back
The frenetic blows of fist and stick,
No more no more, the pain too great
WHACK WHACK WHACK!! till I am sick,
Is this to be my sordid fate?
Drawn to death in this vile place
Pleas lost to the grunting screw,
Hearts cold to the battered face
Till legs are buckled and arms askew.
The final blow, a quick demise,
The spray of blood a graceful arc
Too late to ponder a reprise,
Grateful for the spreading dark.

III
Cast into the Stygian pit
A concrete floor to rest my head,
A hole in the corner in which to ****

Interesting read. The title, Solitary Refinement, drew me in. I was wondering if those were words used by the inspiration, because I remember Henry Rollins using that term in his writing. I was curious in a chicken-or-the-egg kind of way.

After reading part 2 I had to read part 1 and indeed this is a very good poem. The whole of this is an unfathomable struggle to the mind except for those who have gone through it
