A majestic silhouette against the blood red sunset sky
Giving witness to all of humanity
Its message to all who came to see, where beauty used to be
A sad and forlorn picture against a backdrop of emptiness

One tree now stood where a forest once shook and swayed
As the wind in its branches a beautiful symphony had played
Clearing they said, but decimation of a whole forest it turned out to be
As all the other trees had been cut indiscriminately
Dark clouds forming overhead, a tribute to all the trees that were dead

No shelter from the elements could just one tree provide
Exposed and open, no place for the animals to reside
In an extinct barren land where all the trees used to stand
All this emptiness, which once had been forestland
One left standing, giving witness to the carnage

One lone tree left to guard the graves
No more deep-rooted companions today
With branches, all reaching to the sky
Each tree was arrested, cut and toppled to the ground to die
Surrendering to man's exploitive and greedy hand

One tree left as a reminder to man
This farce to suggest they had responsibly logged the land
How can they be allowed to rape the forest trees
And leave nothing but bare ground where the beautiful forest used to be
Hopefully we have learned our lesson [comments] => 5 [counter] => 278 [topic] => 27 [informant] => Willofree [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 10 [ratings] => 2 [editpoem] => 0 [associated] => [topicname] => NaturePoetry )

I live in the north west, and have seen clear cutting my entire life. I could not agree more with the words and ideas you have penned here Terry. We replanted ... they say ... but with saplings that will never stand as tall or as long as their predecessors.

* applause Sir, as I rise to my feet *
