~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We gonna tell y'all a story s'gather round and lend an ear it's about a man of record you just never mind the year
Born into a boxcar of a colored southern belle so began the legend of a man called Slide Cotrelle
He weren't so much an angry man as a attitude gone bad and a guitar playin blues man who done gave it all he had ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Slide Cotrelle's Crossroad Blues _____________________________
My Daddy done tol' me "Don'tcha do like I done You learn to play tha hard way Don' chu take no short cuts son"
Then he took me to a crossroads Where he said it all went down Some VooDoo woman told him He'd play the Hottest Soul around
He'd just have to choose ... But beware a those blues
(She said) A man would meet him out there And he'd know just what to do Be sure you read tha fine print Or you'll be singin the blues The Crossroad blues Get the Crossroad blues
So I stood at that crossroad Beside my old man And I watched as he pleaded His hat in his hands
He said "I was jus' a young boy I didn't have no sense" ( The Devil said ) "You coulda bought it back, child Before all your money was spent
But now its no use Got the Crossroad blues"
When your debts are made up of blood and bone And the Devil calls his due There ain't no gettin around it son Your soul is gonna lose And you get the blues The Crossroad blues
Well the Devil took my daddy When I was just a kid They left me alone and I never went home I been on the run ever since I learned the blues The Crossroad blues
I got the Just can't take it Lord can't shake it Let me break it down ~ For you Blues
(after a moment in stunned silence) *applauds wildly*
I met a man called Bread once... he was headed home, I was headed... to a place I wasn't quite sure I should even be going. He - was extraordinary - more alive at 67 than most of us ever get to be. We got to talking (I think we were supposed to) ...learned the details of each other's lives... and... saw each other underneath the details. And then... high above the world... right there in Row 29... in the middle of a crowded airplane... he sang to me.
Reading this... was very much like THAT.
He... will forever be the essence of The Blues to me. And this - is closer than I've come to being able to describe him.
Fabulous, fabulous piece! I absolute adore this!
