“The Boys of Summer” . . .
now a group of older men
remembering their younger days,
and reliving them again.
Those days of youth evade their grasp,
but, in no way leave their mind.
Memories of times once lived (now past)
are not that hard to find.

They’re not the same as in their prime,
when they were a special breed,
and, grouping with those who shared that time
fulfills each other’s need.
The need to tell the whole wide world,
“In days past we had it all”. . .
a moment enshrined in the halls of time,
when each answered his talent’s call.

Age will never dim the light
on the good times of their youth.
Those who pitched still throw the ball,
in their mind, to Mantle or Ruth.
In later years they worked such jobs
as postman, lawman, coach, or plumber ;
this aging band of “Musials” and “Cobbs” . . .
who were once “The Boys of Summer”.

Though winter follows summer,
and each grows older year by year;
winter has become a “Bummer”
(not something they need to fear).
They know that young men just like them,
are born each and every day;
and as they pass . . . another “Boy of Summer”
will get his chance to play.

A tribute to all the “old timers” in the Shreveport Area who ever played the game. Some made it big, some made it small, but they all made it! In those days it was not the money . . . it was the love of the game.

To the “Boys of Summer” who still love the game, and still play that game called “Baseball”, even if it is in their memories.

Today becomes yesterday too fast . . . yesredays can last and last

What a wise and delightful phrase and Heading!

Simplyu delightful!
So very true how we cling to yesterday. And should,-. In the first place because things were much simpler and less competitive, which makes a great difference in the godly enjoyment of play. and money was not involved for hitting a nose or Chin.

Your poem brings up blessed memories of a brother and his pals, - outrageous they were - but not competing - just rowdy. and did not get paid for it: :)

John this is an absolutely captivating and outstanding poem. It reminds me of the good old days where people played sport for the love of it and not for the money. A wonderfully portrayed poem of yester years which brings much joy to my heart. Well done on a superb piece of poetry. Flawless to say the least.
Hugs,
