With me as I Grow

Contributed by Durango on Sunday, 18th March 2018 @ 06:57:27 AM in AEST
Topic: ChildrensPoetry

We pretend that we can fly

Like airplanes in the cloudy sky;

And then we have a snack to eat,

Just my dad and I.

He tells me funny stories

When he cuts my hair;

We swim and tumble and run,

Sometimes we even share a chair.

One time he found my dirty socks

Inside his fishing tackle box,

He tells me I am smart and strong

And smiles when I sing a song.

He stays with me all day

When Mom goes off to work,

So many games we always play

Like soccer in the park.

He taught me how to toss a ball

And plant a tree so it won/'/t fall,

He wipes each tear and cleans each ear,

At football games, we love to cheer.

I like to ride my big boy bike,

And wear my boots to climb and hike,

Everywhere I seem to go

My dad is with me as I grow.

I like this

my own dad

left my mom

when I was young boy

but I would pretend

that he never had

I still imagined

that he was there

all the time

thinking of me

And my mom

Would say, he is misiing

out, he never paid

any child support, but

she was a nurse, and

instead of going fishing

with my dad, I heard about

patients she took care of

on the oncology ward,

but she would find some nice

guy who would take me along

on a fishing trip now and then,

I would make up excuses in

school when they would ask for

both parents to sign my report

You see I had my pride, or

I had felt as if it was my own

fault he left my mom and all

his kids.

I have no regret, I have

my own son now.

He ran in track like me.

He went from high school

straight to college, unlike I.

He is a kind fellow who

never looks down on anyone

underprivileged as I once was.

He learned that on his own.

Just like I did.

And I call that luck!

What a wonderful write. A great fathers day gift this would be. I remember my dad/'/s later years the most but this still made me think of him.

As a kid he was too busy to smell the roses and have a day off. Sad but hey that/'/s the life the greatest generation lived.

Thank you for your poem.

This is such a sweet write. These days so many fathers aren/'/t there or cant be there. Its also good to know you appreciate him.
Keep up the good writing.

Very nicely couched in the POV of the child, but with echoes of the author in the layered expression. Lovely read, well done, and a genuine tribute.
