Brave Little Town
The homeless sought cover from winter nights grim; But most of the shelters were filled to the brim.
Turning them out in the bitter cold weather; The old and the young huddled together.
Until someone noticed the windows aglow; On many a building, all vacant you know.
All over their city; they came to know; That places of worship, used two days a week;
Were empty, but warm, and a safe place to sleep.
The city requested that that each of them seek; To open their doors to those on the street;
When the shelters were full, and snow fell at night; And their buildings were empty, would that be all right?
Or else they could donate some of their taxes; that no one collected because of their status.
Each had their choice, to shelter or pay; To serve the less fortunate in their own way.
Some wrote out checks, and some housed the poor; And winter nights found them huddled indoors.
In rectories, bingo halls, churchyards and more; In safety and warmth, asleep on the floors.
Just a light in a window; helped this town find; A message of caring for all of mankind;
One brave little city alone in the dark; Found for itself the light in its heart.
