Dead on Christmas Eve
A man neglected to put new batteries in his smoke alarm.
If he had replaced the batteries, he and his family might/'/ve came to no harm.
His stack heater was sitting too close to the drapes.
The house went up in flames and there was no escape.
As people attended their funerals, they grieved.
A family of five perished on Christmas Eve.
The fire started about an hour after they went to bed.
The house burned down and all five of them were dead.
Friends and relatives got the sad news on Christmas Day.
They learned that those five good people passed away.
Their deaths might have been avoided and everybody agrees.
They might have survived if the smoke alarm would/'/ve had new batteries.
