My Favorite Alley
I’ve had my share of back alley nights
when everything good, everything right
is hidden in shadows,
in the dark, of my memories.
I sat there in comfort, my score and me,
let the world go away so I could run free,
oh how I soared, to a place where no wings could fly.
Not moving an inch, never wondering why
I fought out of my skin,
but oh, damn, did I try.
N’ those gutters are crawling, same every night,
and in my favorite alley sits some soul in flight
and damn it’s so low there
I crawled up a mountain just
to visit the day.
Now part of me lives there, it always will,
silent and seeing
new sitters soaring while perfectly still...
Yea, my favorite alley, an eye-close away,
I loathe it and love it, miss it and shove it,
my favorite alley, I’ve never seen in the day.
