There was no human keening
as the diggers dug the grave
birds sang in sweetest rhymes
no more breath the body gave,
Pretty was their feeble notion
life written but upon one page
blew by the twittering songs
gallant flesh so frail in age,
"'Tis a sad thing," said the sun
life lived as in precise degree
away the sun left burning on
loved gained, aye lost in plenty,
Of last and last of dirt upon
the skies gave birth to stars
alone alone life's ending fate
'twas death now mystic art,
None to cry nor shed sad tears
ever none who cared nor knew
time went by he turned to dust..
wild branches of the forest grew.
