Sitting here having brief alternate glimpses of sanity and reality... Snow falling madly from the heavens... down, down, down to earth in fast little going-to-stick flakes.......
Thousands of them already covering the ground as high as my toes... Barn roof white, white, and more white... fresh scent to the air... peaceful... quiet now... bare feet getting cold so I brought them inside here; feel alive; madly happy...
Crisp, new, exciting, intake of breath whilst in the doorway waiting for the dogs to come in... ...They do not want to... Woofheads want to play; espescially the pupps..... chase tails and run amuck... ...barking somewhere in the distance...
Everything on the snow-in list complete... Barrels full of food for all incase nature decides to dump on us yet again.. cut-off from all life; except here. Here. Where the skies meet the mountains... ...and the tree horizen is endless...
I should have known... a pillow eaten... a sock beyond repair... ...Food dish thrown at my feet not once but twice... michevious expressions... bark and whinny and meow and squeak in my face on and off all day... my little wretches...
All the animals frantically looking at me until I served dinners--Which in their opinions were all highly late tonight... an unending full moon in their hearts... restless... naughty... being full of themselves; playfully nipping each others rears...
Snow freshness smell indescribable... in my lungs and hair... On the trees and all around... Branches covered in a thin layer of delicate design... not yet weeping to the ground. Gentle sceen; as far as the eye can see are white branches..
Beyond floodlights only endless darkness of the infinite woods... Walk towards far pasture fences; eventually eyes adjust to the dark and like the cats who follow; you too can see. Never forgeting about not going too far past them...
Out there the cliffs... also sinkholes; those bottomless pits that carry inside them the history of time long begone... coyotes and wild dogs too, the ones who never attack though do... only trying to live and survive like everyone else..
Look far up into the black pit sky and see nothing but pitch clouds... No stars tonight; they are all hiding above the snowfall as it twists and winds in miniscule particles.. forming brilliant glistening piles.. now with Woofprints in them..
Once years ago worried... thoughts of not surviving; Those twenty-two inches of snow; 3weeks of secluded life; electric out; roads unpassable; mountain cut-off from the rest of living life.. those civilized; too afraid to try at this life...
Puny in the face of this mountain... happily smiling with children; All of us carrying water up the pasture hills; from the Spring; buckets of it every day for the pipes had burst from the cold... and pets, snuggled under blankets too; warmth..
Horses our only way out; like hundreds of years ago... Not just my few unimportant years... though who wants to leave? ...an inevitable horseback trek up to the only store for miles.. the only one even up here in this mad country...
Memories; crazy screeching at midnight that sounded like a woman... Hair on back of our necks standing straight up on end.. all of us hudling together on the couch too afraid to speak or move; wondering silently if whatever it was could
Come through the windows and doors... ...Would the dogs have a chance to defend us... ...Morning showed it had decapitated cats.. left peices of them in the barn.. why? Was it only playing with them; as the cats do with the mice?
And then it left our mountain residing on the next one over from us since that time... the bond on his head never to be collected for no one will pay the steep fine if caught.. desperado catching prey whenever hungry; sleek panther...
Also; silent massive phantom; huge tracks left under someones window ledge... Feet thumping along in rythm to hearts inside dwellings.. daylight bringing evidence of the creatures truth... bears released by the forestry so it stays natural...
Galloping hooves thundering upon the ground...vibrating my home; the earth... Someones horses find a way out their fences; cows too; coming to be spoiled until retrieved... fed hay and grain; same; their dogs when sent out to hunt...
Sitting here having brief alternate glimpses of sanity and reality... Snow falling madly from the heavens... down, down, down to earth in fast little going-to-stick flakes...... ...hauntingly clever... the fresh forest essence of delving unity.

I REALLY liked this Nessa, it brought to mind Louis L'Amour, for some reason :) |

You probably won't believe it ... but I started crying half way through reading this. You live in a paradise Nessa - a place I long to be. You wrote this so well - in such a way to bring each image to mind with perfection. Thank you. |
