There is no agony like bearing an untold story inside of you. -- Maya Angelou
~ ~ ~
The words, Tried on for size In the safety Of an empty room, Push hard against The inside of my lips Filling my mouth With discontent. My mind, raging now, Continues to fire A litany of secretly Practiced words Then over analyzes The myriad of Illogical reasons I give myself For holding them in.
Say something!
I grit my teeth And press my lips Tightly together Knowing as I do That there is Far too much To retain any hope Of keeping it all in. With the sting Of the first tear Comes the realization That the words Were not awful To begin with But became so For having been Left unsaid.
Just say it!!!
We slide Up to and over That invisible line Of no return Me with my mouthful Of wretched silence And you with your Frustration showing. It is always then, Precisely then, That the practiced Words disappear As I finally Part my lips Wanting to whisper Something beginning With please
But you turn And walk away
Without a word.
Author's Note: Perhaps I should note.... I used a memory from years ago (one of many similar ones along the way actually) to get this on the page. That particular memory was brought to mind during a recent conversation and then showed up again tonight upon watching a movie called "Speak" (decent flick, not entirely applicable to my life but enough, I suppose, to prompt the write). It seemed... well... enough.

Stunned......
I was so caught up in this the first time I read it....am still just as caught up in it as I read it for the fifth time.
You have the amazing knack to draw the reader in, put them right there with you, urging you on to speak, hurting with you when you don't, aching when they walk away...
...goes back for the sixth time.....

Outword silence: Voluntary, a temporary practice can be wonderful in that it can help (those who) seek spiritual goals in order for a beautiful chosen word to be spoken with self and, or with (of God)
Inward silence: again so that God's voice may be heard more clearly.
Be at peace my friend, I like your poem in that it made me think of how beautiful silence can be.. Raquel Leah :D

Beautiful. It almost funny the way writers and poets, full of words for the paper, find it so hard to speak at times. I do like this one, if I could count the times I've been there....
Take care.

Aw, Snemmers. This is sad. I've read it before and saw I didn't leave a comment???? Hmmmm....as some say "my bad".
*feels guilt for some reason*
I think because, well, you are so gifted and I feel the need to express that. Ye---ap...this is sad but you write so brilliantly.
*pauses*
Amazing and that word seems to fall short here...but yes, you are definitely an amazing writer.
Take care,
Tim

SNM, if only we all could birth those perfect words as they are formed. You are spot on about their shelf-life, though, flowers buried in the mud of our awkward silences, the opportunity lost. A real connecting piece for me, and I suspect, many others.
