Back in history if someone was suspected to be a witch they would be tied up and be thrown into the river and if they drowned they were innocent and if they floated they were a witch. Another way they would of found out was if they were a witch or not, was to throw them of a cliff with a broom and if they died they were innocent and if they flew they were a witch.
Mathew Hopkins- He was thought to be believed to have killed three hundred people (women). The Government paid twenty shillings to kill the witches who were found guilty. He tortured them until they would admit whey were a witch. He made them walk around the room for days and the majority confessed. He also stripped his suspects their right thumb to their right toe and then pushed them into the lake. When they confessed they got the death penalty instead of being burnt drowned or getting hanged. In 1647 Mathew Hopkins was forced to take one of his own tests. He was thrown into the river, floated and got the death penalty.
