Grief

Where did we go wrong? He's walking down the hallway. He shoots the arrows, careful aim, avoiding where the dead lay.
We all hide under tables, behind doors and under desks. We pray and beg for mercy, we take in the bloody mess.
He walks through the rooms putting arrows through the chests of those who run or try to fight. He gives no one a rest.
He sees a teacher far away running for her life. He points and shoots with deadly aim, she falls--his eyes are bright.
I notice his reflection in the glass built in the wall. He's close behind--he sees me. I get ready for the fall.
Fear is all I know as he aims it at my back. My body's frozen, eyes shut tight so all I see is black.
Suddenly I feel it. I'm surprised there is no pain. The blood is warm as it pumps out. He laughs like it's a game.
He walks away, I'm on the floor pretending that I'm dead so maybe I can run away and stop this flow of red.
I hear their screams for him to stop, but he won't until we die. Girl tells boy she loves him and I finally start to cry.
Get up, he's gone, I get away, I run the maze of stairs. I don't know where he's gone to and I'm blindly running nowhere.
He's suddenly in front of me, I know that this is it. The fear becomes too much, he aims and smiles....and it hits....

This is so vivid! I could picture the whole thing while reading this. Chilling work. Thankfully, it was just a nightmare for you. Very good job with this poem. |

this reminds me of a dream i once had. it was so similar it's almost frightening. anyway, good job on turning the dream into a flowing, realistic poem. |
