The Starfish Principle

THE STARFISH PRINCIPLE(Peter Sprenkeler)

A chance discoverya tiny literary treasure I found,
One pregnant with meaningso apt and appropriate for our universe.
An anonymous essaywith a message so deep and profound,
I found myself enthralledI was compelled to commit it to verse.

The story goes on of a young man alone on a beach,
When he comes upon a distressing scenefar from the norm.
Thousands of starfish have been cast updyingonto the sand,
By a violent and powerful storm.

He is so deeply moved at the plight of these hapless creatures,
He is compelled at once to cast them back into the sea.
One by one he decides they have to be saved,
He will save themthe water is where they have to be.

A stranger approacheswith loud raucous laughter,
He has been watchingthe young man's seemingly hopeless task.
He mocks and ridiculesat the futility of the rescuer's mission,
"You fooldo you think you can make a difference?"he asks.

The mocker continues to deride and scoff with great mirth,
But he knows not where this young man's heart resides.
The young man stoops to cast yet another to safety,
He is too busy to listenor his reasons to his assailant to confide.

The mocker continues with his cruel tirade,
But he sees not the glow of love in the young man's eye.
On hands and knees he feverishly casts more back,
The 'impossibility' of his taskhe will resolutely defy.

With heart aglow the young man turns and faceshis mocker,
As he yet again casts another starfish into the sea.
"It has made an enormous difference to that one" he states,
"And it has made a wonderful difference in me"!
