My old friend, I recall The times we had hangin' on my wall I wouldn't trade them for gold 'Cause they laugh an' they cry me Somehow sanctify me They're woven in the stories I have told And tell again... ~ opening to Tim McGraw's "My Old Friend"
~ ~ ~
There aint no magic in the wishin There aint no wisdom in the dream People everywhere wantin so much now They all want everything it seems.
I know they think they deserve it, but Dont know what makes them think they do You jus cant dream yourself a miracle An just wishin wont make it true.
See, a soul knows what it's destined for Jus as stars know their place in the sky To dream yourself some grand other-than Is jus dreamin yourself a lie.
Now maybe someones told you That you were meant for certain things Perhaps youre doin what you think you should But shoulds aint everything.
If youve been hiding behind a cloud An secretly wishin that you could shine Stop dreamin everyone elses dream Or youll be living it in time.
Fate wont deny the willin soul Shes gonna give you what youre due So, dont waste your wishes on other-thans Jus' dream the miracle of you.
Author's Note: My "old friend", Bread (this man I had never met before until I sat down next to him on an airplane) told me about his life one afternoon. From that day to this, I have felt incredibly honored to have had the opportunity to hear his story. All I can say is... Bread got it right --- he expected little, probably got less, and still, as he sat there reflecting back on what by then had been a reasonably long life, had a twinkle in his eye and a song bursting from his soul. Yeh, Bread got it right. How he lived, and more so how he loved, will ever be an inspiration to me. I can still hear his voice and every now and then, I pick up my pen and his words tumble out.

wow.... i dont even know where to start. I think you pegged this perfectly. the first verse is a great opener... everyone does seem to think theyre intitled to everything... and I know sometimes I fall into this category myself. this made me think alot. and if you got the inspiration from conversing with a new friend, then you are blessed to meet such an inspirational friend! great write!!! A+++++
I hope everything is well... !! |
