SIXTEEN MINUTES FROM HOME(Peter Sprenkeler)

Like anyoneI have always admired courage,
Of all man's varied qualitiesone globally respected.
Gifted and talented individuals of rare stock and fibre,
Their lives laid on the linefear among then never detected.

Brave and stoicthey are all acutely aware of the risk,
And yet they darediscoveries to find anew.
A rare and priceless breed of human being,
In any sphere of actionthey always number few.

But sadly it is a factsometimes they do not return,
They on occasionwill pay the ultimate price.
Yet this will never deter this hardy band,
Never to be waveredby negative advice.

And so it was todaywhen seven of these people died,
A tragedy for mankindand indeed for science.
They knew the risksand yet they relished the chance,
Thumbing their noses at dangerwith resolute defiance.

Yet others will rise to fill their large shoes,
The spirits of these heroeswill never be alone.
They ventured for manthey lost their lives in the challenge,
Sadlythey were only sixteen minutes from home.

Written to commemorate the lives of the seven astronauts killed todayonly minutes from home and safetymankind will miss you.
