SALIERIS LAMENT
History has painted me black my friend Those who choose the words which are recorded And those discarded Chose them well They try to give you a brighter sheen But your light would shine Through any screen or twist of words by any man I admired you, yes As you knew As any man would admire another blessed by Angels More, blessed by God Himself But my admiration was never once turned to envy My eyes never gazed with avarice As your fingers Teased and enticed perfection From wood and strings
True You made me question my talent In the shadow of genius I defy any man not to But I neither hated nor desired to be you I do not think you knew I was there that night When The Magic Flute Brought scenes Ne'er seen before When the crowds beat the door To be in to witness the wonder
I did not poison you, Wolfgang It would be beyond my hand To take from this world Such a blessed spirit I was there at the last When they put the body of a man Who created glory from simple sound Into holy ground
