Dead Letter Postscript

Contributed by spike on Friday, 21st April 2006 @ 10:27:58 PM in AEST
Topic: LostLove

Dear You,

Just an add-on to the last,
I know that were over and the past is past
But I want you to know, Im doing okay,
And I hope that youll reply someday
So stop worrying that Ill misread the signs
- Im not longing for those times.

No, Im not writing in blood, or tears,
Just plain black ink I bought through Sears
Im not spilling my heart out in every word
(Even Id think thats absurd)
The return address this time, isnt Hell
- Ive climbed out of that well.

Anyway, Ive finally got it through my head,
That little canary of emotions is dead
The bone cage is quiet, no shrill tweets,
Its just the blood pumping, a few soft beats
Still, I should have better read the signs
- When the bird stops breathing, the heart resigns.

Ill close off now, but please reply,
Just a few lines, by and by
Ive moved on from being rejected,
But do we have to be so disconnected?
Break ups are not victimless crimes
- So think of me sometimes.

Yours Truly,

To be honest, I'm having a hard time deciding upon the comment to leave here. I'm not sure why that is...

From an emotional perspective... you pretty much had me with "Dear You". From a pure poetic standpoint, it is the third stanza that appeals to me the most. But... perhaps what strikes me most about this piece is.... simply the inclination to write it. Yes... I think that (the last part there) is what I wanting to say.

There ya go again, Spike. Takin' universal situation, puttin' it to such a personal level that I'm saddened for you personally by the perceived regretted loss o' someone special. A MASTER bringin' it down to earth with "Just plain black ink I bought through Sears" Let's see, have ya heard the word SUPERB lately?

When writing somehting so close to the heart, it's hard not to sound cliche, but you write this carefully and excellently. Good for you. it has the emotion that so many of these types of poems lack.
