what do you want to be when you GROW UP?

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
adults often ask me,
these are the ten words I dread so drastically
this age-old question gets me stirred up inside,
as my face begins to turn red, this is my reply:

I am simply but a child, I do not know
what I will possibly want to be when I grow
I am only nine, please give me some time
before I make this important decision of mine.

As of now what I worry is passing third grade
and surviving school lunches and slush lemonade
and avoiding girls and their revolting germs
and filling my pockets with lizards and worms.

No, I do not want to think about a job right now
I do not want to stress on how
to make enough money to pay the bills
and working 40 hours against my will.

My mind is busy thinking about candy and games,
staying up late, and playing in the rain
My whole reason for living is to have lots of fun
I do not want this time in my life to be done.

"What do you want to be," you ask?
To even come up with an answer is a difficult task
That's a ton of pressure to put on a kid
But without thinking, that's what you did!

I guess I could be a doctor, lawyer, or cop
or a custodian who works with a pail and a mop
although every boy dreams of being a famous athlete
or I could be a shark hunter or a clown with big feet.

In the end,
the answer I tell you, you'll give no thought
no review, no discussion, nor even a plot
No, you'll just smile and say, "That's great!"
and pat my head and fix my hair straight.

So before I answer your irritating little question
I'll look you in the eye and make a suggestion
that before you ask this question again
try to think back to before YOU were ten
and see if you remember someone irritating you
by asking, "What do you want to be when you grow up," too!

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
