Memories of Childhood

Memories of Childhood

I recall my days of youth; heart-rending moments trapped in time,
Then every now and then, I relive them in my mind,
So vividly they linger, childlike ghosts of long ago,
Seem so distant from existence, in these days of growing old,

I recollect the sand dunes; I stood aloft to touch the sky,
Casting my eyes towards the ocean, and the bathers passing by,
I have visions of the waves come to boil upon the sand,
In my mind I shield the sunlight with the edge of sun kissed hand,

I see a mirage of a meadow, come alive with summer hues,
Sat gazing at a rainbow, brushed upon a sky of blue,
Watching a cloud become a lion, rolling on a subtle breeze,
Bow-tied arms I lay daydream, amidst the buzzing of the bees,

I am absorbed into a memory; snow has fallen upon dawn,
As I climb from early slumber, scratch my head and then I yawn,
Gazing out from misted window, young breath hangs upon the pane,
As my eyes follow wayward footsteps, of the man who walks the lane,

I am transported too to a river; I and my brother feed the swans,
As we stroll along the pathway, empty handed, bread has gone,
Looking back over my shoulder, mother trials upon our pace,
As I stare at my reflection, I see the joy that paints my face,

I am dropped into a moment, placing tinsel on a tree,
As the excitement overwhelms, my face portrays the glee,
The scent of pine swells on the heat from the ditty of the flames,
As the joys of festive season, seem to coarse unto my vanes,

I recall my days of youth, those memories that never fade,
They just lay dormant in our minds, and blur into a haze,
As my life it goes through changes, I live and I learn,
For my days of carefree childhood, this man has learnt to yearn.
