*~Ol' Red~*

An eerie, blood red glow looms over the island...
For the island holds some deep, dark secrets...
A place of sheer horror...
The sacrificing of animals, and I'm sure people too...
The stench of death lingers in the air...
Go there today, just before sunset...
And be prepared to be scared out of your skin...

You have to cross the rickety bridge...
Across the murky water, overgrown with moss...
Around the winding stretch of blacktop...
To the park, the only cover is the shelter house...
But you won't find 'Ol Red there...
Oh no...
He lurks in the woods...
Waiting for his next victim...

Do you have the nerve to venture in...
Sit among the trees and listen...
What do you hear...
I think I can tell you...

I sat in that same spot, late one evening some time ago...
On the tree that had been knocked over by a storm...
As the sun sank slowly in the sky, a chill ran through my bones...
This just doesn't feel right...

There came a rustling a leaves behind me...
I shot up, physically shaking in my shoes, and looked in that direction, dropping my lighter on the ground...
Nothing...
I slowly bent down, grabbed the lighter, and stood back up...

Pulling my smoke out of my pocket, i flip open the pack, shove one in my mouth and light it up, french curling the smoke up my nose...
Blowing the smoke back out of my mouth, I sit back down...
The crickets began to chirp louder...
And the bullfrogs croaked in the swamp a few feet away...

But I still didn't feel right...
Like eyes were looming over me...
Breathing down my neck...
Making my hair stand on end...

All of a sudden a crackling sound echoed through the night air...
I turned around to see an enormous tree, hurdling down the hill in my direction...
I was frozen...
I had no idea what to do...

I tried to scream...
But nothing came out...
I tried to run...
But my body didn't budge...

The tree was less than 10 feet away...
9 feet...
8 feet...
7 feet...
6 feet...
5 feet...
4 feet...
3 feet...
2 feet...
1 foot...
It stopped dead in its tracks, right at my feet...

Then I felt it again...
My hair stand on end...
I turned back to see him...
'Ol Red...

A black figure...
With piercing red eyes...
Looming out of the darkness in a red mist...
I froze...

He cast me a devilish smirk...
The mist lifted...
And he was gone...

Me

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
