Dying Star

Contributed by Jaya on Friday, 7th February 2003 @ 06:00:00 PM in AEST
Topic: BirthdayPoems

As I look up gazing at the night sky,
I see the stars twinkling up high,
Oh boy! there a star has died,
and its left me gazing wide-eyed..
I know its time to make a wish-
time to ask for something that I'll cherish...
Now do I ask for my favourite dish-
delicious fare which I relish?
Or do I ask for beauty and fame-
cause these things seem to attract every dame.
No I think I'll wish for a new dress.....
and a tiara for my curly tress.
But what about the diamond I've always wanted-
certainly something that could be flaunted!
Or how about the velvet shoes-
something no maiden would refuse...
Oh how I continue to think and think-
I'm so excited I forget to blink!
Suddenly I glance upon the street-
a group of urchins with barren feet-
their clothes torn to a shred....
O here they come begging for bread...
Their sorrowful eyes are full of pain,
I look at them filled with disdain......
this sight just tears me apart-
it leaves a pain inside my heart.
Oh how I wish I could change the situation...
I wish for the same without hesitation.
I see them leave and hope for the best...
I hope that my wish is the end of their test,
their trials, their sorrow, their pain and grief...
I hope its been replaced by childlike mischief...
I feel happy like never before-
I feel I've got happiness galore....
I realise that a good deed performed
can even warm a heart that's deformed.
I have a feeling my wish has come true...
I suddenly stop feeling so blue.
The diamond, the dish and all those things,
cannot compensate the joy my wish brings.
I realise I've broken through my cage-
through all the material things that cause an outrage...
I'm on the path of rectitude-I've gotten out of my shell...
my world has suddenly become bigger and swell.
My heart feels light and I want to sing-
I want to thank heaven for everything...
I look up to the sky and what do I see:
there's another dying star waiting for me!
