Magnetic Yellow Ribbons

While the soldier is restless
who sleeps in the sand,
A blood-stained rifle
still rests in his hand.
He longs for his wife,
and a soft warm bed,
As the thoughts of his daughter
go round in his head.
With the flash of a bomb,
and a bang in the night,
he jumps to his feet,
to go join in fight.
Now his soul is all brittle,
and lacquered with hate.
Thank God for those ribbons
stuck on our tailgates.
Is the Blood of the children
that covers the wall
worth less than the fuel
to get to the mall?
They drive to the the Starbuck's
just three blocks away,
and complain of the prices
for gas that they pay.
They ride in their trucks
to go cut the trees down,
and make room for the
Wallmarts that cover the ground.
Will they come to their senses
a few years too late?
Thank God for the ribbons
stuck to their tailgates.
Do you feel any safer
now in your own home
that you can't speak your mind,
cause you don't trust the phones?
The forests were yours,
but now they're for sale.
you'd seal the Earth's tomb
with a star spangled nail.
You'll sit in the pews
waring nothing but rags,
but you can't wash the red
from the stripes on the flag.
You're hoping that Jesus
will come save your fate.
Thank God for those ribbons
stuck on you're tailgate.

WOW
I am anti war in any shape or form (including the stupid Iraq and USA war, and Australia's participation in it) and I love this poem it is amazing.
So many people just walk around never thinking of anything but their own lives and then they go and take a side in the debate of war not knowing of their own prejudice.
I know my own prejudice and I do try to prevent them from being shown, but people like my mums boyfriend...
Look what your poem has done to me, made me go so off track!
Thank you for such a thought provoking poem.

Good anti war poetry raises contronting issues and poses challenging questions, rather than present a didactic tirade against war per se. Youve achieved an emotional and political piece here. Iraq has opened a Pandora's box for the whole world. Lets hope those in the Western govts that flirt with 'Armageddon in their lifetime' don't win out.
