It is within the experience of everyone that when pleasure and pain reach a certain intensity they are indistinguishable. ~Arnold Bennett
Perhaps only the truest of poets can understand Why beauty inevitably engenders pain When the spectrum of ones reality shifts And ones heart is full of what may not exist (And yet, so undeniably, does).
Like a silent song that is somehow heard Or the magnificent flight of a wingless bird Through vulnerability, strength is unearthed When from deep recess, a star is birthed (Neath the glow of a distant moon).
As each night falls, before dawn breaks Impassioned souls, stir in the wake Of a myriad of moments that never came Though precious memories of them remain (For realitys an indisputable lie).
And the truth is never will it be the same For poets that learn to embrace the pain Their hearts so tragically and beautifully marred Hung like a dream from that glorious star (To dance indefinitely in the light).
A thousand words are then redefined For Fate is trapped in the hands of Time And normal will never be normal again This, a gift, with unforeseeable end (As ever brighter becomes the night).
Author's Note: I have, in truth, multiple poets to thank for the inspiration that brought this particular piece to the page. I will not name them here as it would feel odd to do so (and doing so would reveal that I do strange things like talk to dead people - lol!), but I do so hope that some might recognize themselves as being wonderfully influencial of late. So... to the one that has journeyed with me through the night and speaks a similar language, to the one that found something that wasn't even there and set me rambling, to the one that allowed me to comfortably reveal a painful old scar, to the one that left his extraordinary soul behind for me to find and, lastly but most definitely not least, to the (presumptous! *grins*) one that just (again) helped me (in their own magnificent and unique way) to open this door...........
thank you all.
~Snem

This was very beautiful, Silent. I liked it alot. I guess you could say that we er...speak the same language?
Like a silent song that is somehow heard
Or the magnificent flight of a wingless bird
Through vulnerability, strength is unearthed
When from deep recess, a star is birthed
(‘Neath the glow of a distant moon).
That verse really stood out to me, i kind if sighed with the beauty of it, wingless bird
great job.

It is ironic that my random roll of the die today produced Lao tzu's second of eighty-one poems: Using Polarity. Snemmy, your poem connects to the first line of that poem:
"When all the world knows beauty as beauty,
there is ugliness.
When they know good as good,
there is evil."
I believe you may have put it even more beautifully than Lao tzu. Your work is awesome.!

Exquisite Snems..
everything technical about this, is superbly done-
I have an affinity for five line stanzas as well-
brilliant my friend..
and your sentiments are unfathomed..
I'm reminded of a certain philisophical passage by the great E.A.Poe:
"...there is, however, a class of fancies, of exquisite delicacy, which are not thoughts, and to which, as yet, I have found it absolutely impossible to adapt language. They seem to me, rather psychal than intellectual. They arise in the soul, at it epochs of most intense tranquility."
Edgar Allan Poe ...1846
I find this, your words above.. very comparable to Poe's quote-
it's fantastic Snemmy..
Truly-
Billy

It seems to me that you have an exuberant existence of mind that many of us do not. That, to me, is a rare gift and you have that gift. That is why you compare to, if not exceed, yes exceed, some of the so often referred to as great poets of our time and time's past.
Okay, so anyway, yeah, am I supposed to interpret this or may I just enjoy it. I know that sounds familiar but that is just me being me. ;-)
I'm not sure yet, if I know why beauty inevitably engenders pain....I just merely know that it does. I imagine you know why because I feel you are a true poet.
I do know that they, the true poets, leave their words for us to be forever savored throughout their lives and our lives to be enjoyed for all time.
You seem to have inspirationally paid homage to them, somehow, reinventing their essence in this wonderfully thought provoking poem and have stored their memories within it.
As always, thank you for sharing your magic with us.
Me
:-)

“Excess of sorrow laughs, excess of joy weeps.” William Blake. In the case of poets, I'd add, an excess of either speaks something like this.

Oh my dear snemmers! I remember this conversation and the fact that I, (unlike you)
have been failing MISERABLY to convey these thoughts. This was so bloody
impressive, hun. You know how I completely agree with the sentiments and how painfully
acute that awareness is. I am always flabbergasted at your ease of poetic thought.
The way you embrace an emotion and are able to articulate that in so beautiful a
manner is beyond compare. You are an artist in every sense. And this piece, is
precious to me, on many levels. Thank you for writing it. Thank you for sharing it.
*hugs*

Snemmy, your writing often whispers of the night, the thinking hours, the poet's domain and those whispers speak loudly to me.
Yes,beauty does,so often, give birth to pain and the embracing of that pain leads, surely ,to the light.Another outstanding! write, delivered with a wonderful, poetic clarity and understanding. You are, truly,a poet's poet,

A beautiful write, and though these glorious words before us know may linger awhile, they will eventually become background. Yet always available for recall so never do they disappear. Also, when thinking of beauty and pain, I envision beautiful creatures and resources of nature; and mourn the loss of many natural beautiful life forms due to neglect or abuse of our environment - for beauty is fragile.
A wonderful write, snem

There is that, that propensity for poets to have been a familiar of pain, that cruel mistress. For indeed what is poetry but an expression of the heart and what is the most poignant of expression but that dual twinning of pleasure and pain. For like love and hatred, both are emotions that occupies the same place with the same intensity of reactions but perhaps in different directions. For if we love or hate someone it is always with all our hearts. And as pleasure takes us to celestial heights then pain will drag us to the deepest depths. Well my take at least. For this write does speak of such correlation of this understanding of those poetically inclined. But I think the simplest thing is that most poets , acclaimed or amateur are individuals who understood that very fact highlighted in your poem herein...that intensity of emotions either at the height of pleasure or pain. Thoughtful, evocative write my friend that evokes some things for my mind to chew upon and a bit of understanding of the poetic psyche. |

I am so glad that I found this gem of a poem,
Your words are simply perfect to express these feelings that most of us have ever only experienced and never truly understood. You seem to have a profound comprehension and a knowledge of how to convey it.
This spoke volumes to me, and I thank you for a thought provoking write.
