I lost a part of me that day When flesh and bone Met spinning steel
Strangers descended rapidly Attempting to convince They shared my pain
I could not bear to look upon What damage had been wrought The severity of the severing
Leather and cotton cut away Exposed the truth of what would be I didnt want to know or see
Recover me I begged of them
********************
Vague recollections of sirens A knotted towel Clenched between my teeth
Forced laughter amidst tears Feeble attempts to remain strong Stay consciously aware
Transferred into a triage room A well meaning nurse that thought I should be psychologically prepared
Pulling back the stark white sheet Encouraging a lengthy gaze I didnt want to know or see
Recover me I begged of her
********************
Now I lay down upon this bed I am sown, patched Stitched loosely together
Looking so much the scarecrow Harboring dreams of tomorrow So many reverent reveries
Slow walks through Spanish mosses Running barefoot upon the shore Willing these images into reality
Pressing, stretching, strengthening Learning to compensate quickly Now I want to know and see
Recover me
I demand myself

your good spirit towards this accident is exactly what is going to heal you my friend. This touched me greatly. Are you home or still in the hospital? I have a card and letter awaiting the mail box Monday so it will reach you soon.

Wow. I like this'n a lot, Scott. It's tremendously illustrative, and then that refrain adds an emotional immediacy that comes straight home to the reader. I haven't seen a lot of poetry dealing with the impact of direct physical injury, but this is definitely just right.
Excellent. All the best in recovery and in continued skillful wordsmithing.

Naz,
It's good to see you post another poem, especially on the subject of your injury. Writing about it will help you cope. The poem very effectively takes us through the various stages of your recovering process. The initail denial and pain; physical and emotional, dealing with the physical loss....The regret....and eventuallly your abllity To make positive recovery choices and positive attitude.
You really are a good example of "True Grit" my friend. I contunue to pray for you and your family, my friend.

Hello stranger .. *hugs you*
This piece is so utterly strong, Scott. I can't imagine what emotions
you have had to face, endure and work through during this time,
but let me say, you have done it with complete grace and fortitude.
I love the repition of the sentiment "recover me" through it.
I believe that you are saying this to yourself, not just at the end, but
throughout! It somehow reiterates your will and strength to not only
face what lies before you, but come out even stronger than before!
(and you will .. this I know)
Excellent post, snaz. Just as it should be.

BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO! How inspirational Nazy......so now when you get discouraged, you pull up your own poem......and remind yourself.....you demand yourself to get well!
With an attitude such as yours Nazzy, you'll be back and at 'em in no time at all!
It's not what happens to us in this life, but how we react to it............keep up positive thoughts and positive actions. I had to learn to walk again Nazzy, I'm walking along side of you with every step!
Warm love
consue
We love you

It's kind of wonderful really, that when tragedy strikes we have the ability to overcome it..as you are doing, even writing about it. I admire you..I have a really low threshhold for pain..not only that..your writing is sooooo good. wow. |
