We lost 350 on that September Morn So many not present when their Child was born
They were ordinary in an extraordinary situation The cause was good and it was life in motion
They got their call and through on their boots Grabbed their helmets and donned their suits
They didnt plan to leave us that morning They went to save when they got the warning
Thats what they did without a second thought Scared as we, but did what they were taught
They ran in as all ran out Thats what their job was all about
We usually lose 6 in a given year And what I learn brings a tear
We lost 350 in one hour When we lost the second tower
How can anyone get over that I forget when I slumber then Im back
Are you okay, I remember that Everyday after that day I just sat
With my head in my hands and tears running through I went to ground zero and didnt know what to do
The commotion was frightening. The dust and emotion not settling
Not only they died but others Mothers, sons, dads and brothers
Others ran out but they ran in To remember that the healing begins

Its hard to understand just how courageous ordinary people can be in extraordinary situations, and how their surviving colleagues and families find (or don't) ways to cope, to go on, even to go back into burning high rises. Firies, as we call them in Oz, are real modern day heroes, alright.
I'm writing this from half way around the world, but 9/11 could have happened in my backyard, it touches me so emotionally. Good poem, very human and respectful.

A heartfelt tribute to that horrific day. We lose sight of how brave our service people are in all aspects of the field.
