Letter to a Muslim
I dont want to hate you
I want to respect your God
But you seem to make it so difficult
Your attempts at friendship seem odd
Your ran away from tyranny
Or did you bring it too?
An offer of food and shelter
Was the least we thought we should do
Then help you build your temple
Your school, your shops, your business
The gift of free speech, before denied you
And anger is the emotion you show us
Your clothing and appearance seems sinister
Your voices seem harsh and cold
You use the gifts of the 21st centaury
But claim that its all the product of evil
According to a book 2,000 years old
Your people fight amongst each other
Your people fight all nations of the world
Your people claim to be victims
Your people dont listen, because they want to be heard
Get your terrorists to wear a uniform
Like our soldiers, so we know who is doing the job
And when you fight amongst yourselves
Could you have a good guy and bad guy mob?
Freedoms we have fought for
You dismiss or cast as sins
Spitting on the helping hand
As your mobile phone rings
You claim your right to free speech
But condemn any discussion on your faith
Tolerance expected
Never given with grace
Weve bent too far back now
Your feelings are supposed to be more important than mine
I have lived in a culture of progress all my life
Progress means change, something you seem to deny
If we have a common enemy
If we have a common ground
You must show us, without ceremony
The voice of peace is a wonderful sound
The voice of peace is common ground
Pointing the finger doesnt bring peace
Shouting and screaming bad tactics too
If you expect respect, then give it
If you want acceptance
Practise tolerance too
If theres something you dont understand
You just dont get
Remember, I feel like that too
I dont want to hate you
I dont want to fear your ways
I want the value of a life, to be the same
No matter to what God you do or do not pray

| a clearly stereotypical view of muslims you have percieved. things like clothing and the following of a book should not offend you. this is their choice and their choice alone. After being pointed at you expect tolerance. i admit there are some hardline extremists that are spoiling the image of Islam but the tiny minority should not infest the lives of the million muslims in this world. and clothing of any sort should not be offensive. just because people want to maintain their cultures and religious values it does not necessarily mean they are not progressing. just because they speak out you condemn them and attack their lifestyle. nice try. |

Hm well, I pretty much agree with the last poster above me.
What we see on the media is extremely biased against Muslims,
and I only know this because I've met a few in real life now.
Before that, I had much the same views as you do now.
But once you meet one in real-life, you tend to realise that they're not all violent, suicide-bombing, ungrateful terrorists --
Rather, most of them seem to be quite human.
I believe there are good and bad in every single religion, but it's a pity that people in the world are sheep and believe almost everything they watch on TV. If more people did their own research about different things, then this place would be better. Not to focus on you or anything, just in general.
It's pretty sad, though, that the minority of Muslims (there are billions of them around the world) are the actual terrorists. Less than 1% are the terrorists, actually, and it's a pity because they give all the other human-Muslims a bad name.
I guess I'm just not one to judge solely on religion.
In our Ethics class, actually, most of the class (me included) were extremely surprised to learn that Christianity and Islam is insanely similar, with only one or two major differences. I know it changed the views of a lot people in our class (again, me included).
Anyway, that's the end of my rant heh.
As an Aussie, though, I'm proud to say I think everyone deserves a fair go.
