The Journey of the Ash
My fine filtered friend My only solace in the aftermath of unrequited love Ive found someone to love; that I always find all too easily Finding someone to love me is much harder Maybe too hard for a **** up like me I take a deep drag and try to burn it away I tap my friend nervously An ash escapes and begins to float around The journey of the ash begins to fascinate me It refuses to land It finds itself continually caught in the wind Every time I think its journey is over it finds some invisible upwind and continues It moves behind me and I turn eagerly to see where it plans to fly next There is something beautiful in it that I dont understand I cant understand what its so powerful to me as a tear escapes my eye It refuses to die Its journey continues for a few minutes more, never without my eye on it As the ash finally relents and falls to the floor I turn away Id rather not see its end I take another drag and watch a new ash begin its journey My cigarette soon dies and I am left The journey of the ash brought me brief solace, but reality does not hide for long My thoughts go back, as they always to do to her I remember how much I love you and how you will never love me I remember all the foolish, lovesick things Ive said and how they dont matter to you I remember that Ive been here before I remember this feeling My heart sinks and I close my eyes I light up another cigarette

I find this poem very interesting, making a cigarette appear as a friend, as often smokers do. I liked how you described how it numbs your emotional pain, with out completely blocking it. But it appears to me that like the ash, your journey of “unrequited love” could too come to an abrupt end. This is merely an interpretation, but it seems as though through painful recollections, you have come to this very conclusion. Perhaps there will be a sequel of a new and prospering love? Best of wishes! |

Hmmm not weird at all...quite good in fact. I use to be a cigarette smoker so I do understand the smoke as a friend. I loved how you took the time with this....I too was watching the ash. Thanks for sharing.
Peace, Laura |
