A Face In The Crowd

Contributed by mohan on Thursday, 1st February 2007 @ 01:54:37 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

The freshness of youth blooming,
I was seated in a dingy rattling bus,
That stopped for long annoyingly;
Sandwiched at rush hour traffic jam.
The incessant rev up of engines,
The irritable hoot of bizarre horns,
And the liberal release of toxic fumes,
Made me feel revulsive and restless.
I wished, I had a magic carpet,
To fly away, farther away from the bustle.
And out of the blue, my attention was drawn,
Across the road and on the pavement,
To a beautiful face in the surging crowd.
For a moment I thought she stopped,
To look at me with a beaming smile.
She was a stunning beauty, in absolute term.
Enraptured I was by her captivating charm.
Her smile, surely the envy of Mona Lisa,
Her stare, penetrating like a laser beam,
Burned me with intense strange feeling,
Causing me, to react in a very eccentric way;
Getting down from the bus on a sudden impulse,
I ran across, unwary of oncoming vehicles.
When I reached the spot, gasping for my breath,
She was nowhere to my utter shock and disbelief.
I walked up and down the pavement,
Wandered here and there like a vagabond,
Oh, no, how come she vanished just like that?
Was she a next door girl from the neighbourhood?
Or a visitor from far-flung corner of the earth?
Or an angel descended from heaven on a sojourn?
I returned home, trying to brush aside her memory.
The days that followed were disturbing, quite,
She sneaked into my dreams, night after night,
Beckoning me, with sensuous gesture;
Wrecked my will, and lured me again,
To search for her, amongst the milling crowds,
In the shopping malls and the cinema halls;
Over the sandy beach and busy market places;
But only to turn back, exhausted and disappointed.
Soon I realized, it was not her flaunting features
That I was drawn to her so desperately.
An innate passion was craving for her.
May be it was a deep emotional bond,
Of our previous birth; if I were to believe!
My soul was longing to seek her, to unite.
Months, years and decades passed by,
Much water flowed under the bridge.
My declining health and advanced age,
Withered not her memory;
Nor diminished my undying love
For her; it remained ever refreshed.
On and off, when I set out to search,
Measuring my pace, as I walk down,
Adjusting my thick rimmed glasses,
I look around, stopping now and then,
Hopefully and excitedly for that face in the crowd
Unrelenting and undeterred my search will go on,
Until my mortal frame is consumed, reducing it to ashes.
I will find her, if not on the planet earth, one day;
In the other world, for that grand union, some other day.
