Often is the weary soul~
tempted to simply succumb
And escape from reality~
through an altered states freedom...
Who are any to nay say~
this choice as one viable
And for anothers sanity~
believe they can be liable...
I, myself would not think to~
as twice maybe should others
Because there is far more we need understand~
than just right or wrong can cover...
While perhaps well intended~
few things are ever black & white
And by supposing that they are~
denys both the dawn & twilight...
Salvation or destruction~
is on self alone imposed
Yet from each is gained the knowledge~
through which our humanity grows...

Boy you are something else i gotta say, first your style is incredibly beautiful the method in which you present your poem is awesome. so easy to read and very convincing along with true mature wisdom. You convey a realisium that almost jumps off the page, a delicate form of in your face writting. Very enjoyable.

Bravo with agreement for millenniums passed as a part of many sacred ceremonies with vestiges to this day ranging from imbibing, fasting, etc. at the core of many religions is an altered state.
The simple truth is we are free to do whatever we want but in order to honor the corporeal flesh and get the most out of life we must also be responsible to balance against the broad range of ones freedom:
"...Salvation or destruction~
is on self alone imposed
Yet from each is gained the knowledge~
through which our humanity grows..."
However rarely is any other life enriched by the demise of the user to dysfunctional proportions no less right to death at that point it becomes the mess for those who are responsive, responsible to clean up. In that regard humanity doesn't grow as it did from the writings of Poe or Coleridge it is used even abused by whole communities.
Though Provoking and Well Done
